Attendance

School has a statutory duty to keep your child safe which includes knowing where they are if they are not in school. We appreciate that children are sometimes genuinely ill so if your child is going to be absent due to illness, please inform the office by 8:40am on every day of absence. If you do not contact the office, school will ring you followed by every contact number we hold for your child until we speak to somebody. If your child is absent for two consecutive days and we are unable to contact anybody, we will visit the family home in order to ensure that your child/ children are safe and well.

School attendance and attainment are closely linked.  They work with parents to ensure children reach their full potential by attending school regularly. Miss Cusworth is here to help and support you in getting your child into school, on time, and ready to learn!

At Weelsby Academy we reward excellent attendance in many ways.

Each week the class with the highest overall attendance win our ‘Attendance Champions’ trophy. The trophy is full of treats for the children to enjoy.

Every day that a class has 100% attendance they receive a ‘letter’ to spell out the words Weelsby Academy. Once they have spelt both words in full they enjoy various treats as part of our attendance rewards scheme. These include a ‘PJ Party’, ‘Pizza Party’, ‘Yes Day!’ and more!

Every week, each child who has achieved 100% attendance receives a raffle ticket which is entered in to a prize draw at the end of each term and those children which achieve 100% attendance for a full academic year enjoy a trip to the cinema, Nerf Wars or Bowling.

Miss Cusworth has responsibility for attendance and welfare.  If you have a query or would like to speak to Miss Cusworth please contact the school office.

Lateness

ARE YOU HOT (Here OTime)

Lateness not only affects your child’s education – it doesn’t allow them the social time to settle with their friends, they may feel upset or embarrassed, and it disrupts the rest of the class.

Being frequently late for school adds up to lost learning.

Registers close after 30 minutes, any pupils attending after that time are classed as unauthorised absence.

Punctuality – arriving at school on time
School opens its doors at 8:45am. Registration begins at 8:50am and ends at 8.55am. If your child arrives after 8.55am, they will be marked as L in the register, which means they are late. If they arrive after 9:25am, they will be recorded as U and this results in an unauthorised absence for the morning, which affects your child’s attendance. You will receive a letter, a home visit and be invited to a support meeting if we are concerned about the number of lates your child has.

Unavoidable Medical Appointments
We appreciate that some children have unavoidable medical appointments during term time such as speech and language or hospital appointments. All we ask is that you provide a copy of the appointment letter. Although we cannot mark a child present who is attending an unavoidable medical appointment, if these are their only absences, 100% rewards will not be affected. We would appreciate if routine medical appointments such as dental and optician appointments are made out of school hours where possible. This will significantly minimise the disruption to your child’s learning.

Leave of Absence

In August 2024, the government released new legislation preventing Head Teachers from authorising term time holidays other than in exceptional circumstances.

We can no longer automatically accept letters from employers as a reason for approval, nor can we accept special offers, holidays as gifts or prizes as reasons to authorise the holiday.

We consider each request individually and cannot approve any leave retrospectively. If you wish to apply for a leave of absence, please complete a form which is available in our office.

If the school does not authorise a leave of absence and you take your child out of school, or keep your child off longer than was agreed, the absence will be unauthorised and the local authority may issue a penalty notice. The fine is £80 per parent per child if paid within 21 days, rising to £160 if paid between 21 and 28 days. Non-payment may result in the case being referred for prosecution through the magistrate’s court.
